Read about Saint Pete's street system There is a logic behind the naming of Saint Pete's thoroughfares. Central Avenue runs from Downtown to Treasure Island, and divides the city into North and South. Any thoroughfare north of Central has "N" after it, and any south of Central has "S" after it. For example, 34th Street runs north and south. North of Central Avenue, it's called "34th Street North."

You can go north on 34th Street S, or south on 34th Street N. The "N" or "S" in the name only refers to the location, and has nothing to do with the direction.

Another important fact to remember is that streets always run north-to-south, while avenues always run east-to-west.

So, when you exit I-275 at 22nd Avenue South, it is entirely different from exiting at 22nd Avenue North. Then when you turn right at 34th Street South, you're actually heading north.

Confused? Don't worry, half the fun of any trip is the accidental detours you make along the way. Enjoy!
